Cryptic Axe has lower Strength required, which allows your merc to wear it on a much lower level (without Andy or other Strength items) and better melee range, but Act 2 Merc has a fixed range of 3 despite of the equipped weapon.

Pole arms can be unwieldy and so are always held in two hands. They require a great deal of strength as well.

Thresher and Giant thresher have lower average damage but have better ias, and overall are preferred. I would not use anything else than GPA, Thresher or Gthresher for Infinity.
